SURE-LOC
Versailles, IN

It’s been over a year now since we lost Steve. I am so touched and the family is so comforted that messages kept arriving on the blog. I want to thank everyone on behalf of Steve’s family—as well as our Sure-Loc family—for the thoughtfulness and the compassion that came to us in our time of sorrow. It’s wonderful to read the accounts of the memories people have of encounters with Steve. They have made us laugh and cry at the same time. When Steve was not able to read the messages sent during his illness himself, we read them to him—right up until the day he died. He was very moved and had no idea that he had touched so many people. He was humbled and awed by the outpouring of support and love from all of you. It validated his life for him in a big way. Not everyone gets to have that gift and I know he appreciated it deeply.

So, we want to let you all know how much it means that you took the time to reach out to us. One of the lessons I have learned from this experience is that the moment taken to offer support, comfort and sympathy to the ailing and to their loved ones means so much. On days when we were exhausted and disheartened a message would come through and it changed the whole day. Even if the person is on the other side of the globe, just knowing that you are remembered can give the strength you need to get through that moment. “Thank you” is not enough, but it’s the only expression there is. Stephanie and I are trying to find opportunities to reach out to others in similar situations as a way of paying back – or rather paying forward.

I also want to say how much I appreciate the archers and business people on the show and tournament circuit. I felt it was very important for Sure-Loc and the archery community that I travel: to show that we are strong and that we intend to continue Steve’s legacy. Sometimes, especially at first, it was very difficult to be out there. But I, and my staff, have gained so much from the experience. Thanks to everyone who comes to check on me, keeps me company on the trailer or booth and shares their “Steve Stories”. I treasure it all and always will. Again, thank you.

My greatest memory was sitting in that little cafe/restaurant by the courtyard at the Riviera in Vegas and having a beer and talking archery with Steve. I also remember my very first year in Vegas when I bought the Sure-Loc 3rd axis leveling device and was unsure how to use it. Steve took at least a half hour of his time to thoroughly show me how to use it and from that point forward I knew I was dealing with a class act. Everytime I am sighting in for a tournament or fiddling with my sight, I know Steve is watching over me and and is making sure I do it right. He will be missed, but I know he is looking down at all of us when we are alone on a big flat range on a warm spring night just before dusk and he is smiling and enjoying the moment just watching arrows fly........................

I am so saddened to be here writing this message nearly a year later. Steve was an inspiration to me. We shot many Thursday night leagues together. In a time when everyone seemed to be going to a release Steve was proof for me that I could shoot that 300 without a release. 20+ years later I still think of him nearly every time I go out to shoot....He saw me as one of the last "finger" shooters and often gave me pointers in his "Steve way" to help me along...He was an inspiration then and always will be to me.

I have many fond memories of Steve. I was talking to my brother-in-law about bow hunting last night and was telling him about Sure-Loc Sights. I ended the conversation with I would get more information and tell him how to order one. I am shocked at the news of Steve's passing. He was full of passion, and I always enjoyed speaking with him. As I think about him, one memory comes to mind. I walked into his office to help him with a computer problem, and he was just giddy. He had just received an autographed picture from Geena Davis of her shooting a bow. Of course, we got sidetracked and spent the next 20 minutes talking about it. He was an inspiration to many more people than he probably knew, I remember asking him how he started the business, he simply told me he was shooting his mouth off on how he could build a better bow site, and his friends told him to put his money where his mouth was, so he did. I offer my condolences to his family. I want them to know I am a better person for knowing Steve! Sincerely, Jeff Bacon

Hi I'm sorry I did not know of Steve's passing earlier Till now when I've come on line to get myself a new hunting sight, I only knew of Steve for the sights I shoot with and selling your gear in my old shop in NewZealand. To find this and read through touched my heart and brought back feelings of last year while my father was going through treatment for a cancer. My blessings go out to all the family. And now my new hunting sight will have even more meaning to me now instead of just the best available:) To every one else people like Steve and My Dad need a lot of blood during treatment So please give blood to help others. It's only little to you but means alot to them. God Bless Mathew D'Ath NewZealand

I first met Steve at Wausau Wisconsin at the NFAA field championships. I was doing Ok but while spotting for me he said I was off two inches to the left on a 55yd target. I looked at it and said I was in the spot. He said, "Yes but you are two inches from center." I told him, "Buddy, for me that's a hooter." A while later he gave me some unasked for advice and I bristled inside a little but not wanting to start anything I kept quiet. So I decided I would watch closely what this guy did to see if he should coach me in such a manner. I saw that he had the most beautiful release that I ever saw, so soft. Steve Gibbs, who was this guy? All I know is by the end of the tournament we were good friends and he had my respect and he respected me. I wanted him to come hunting elk with me but although he would have liked to he was a busy man. I shot one more tournament with him at Redding. We came to the Bigfoot target and someone suggested that we all put in $5 in a pot, closes to center of bullseye gets the pot. Darned if I didn't win it, Steve and Eric Hall and several national and world champions were in the group and I won. Then they started telling me I had to buy the beer when we got done and all the grief that goes with winning something like that. So about 6 or 7 targets later we came to the 88 yd herd of elk. This time the bull was only 6 inches not 10. After having listened to all the remarks I asked, "You boys want to do a pot again?" Answered by alot of not fit for mixed audience remarks of what I could do. So with Steve and Eric spotting for me I drew back and shot the best shot of my life and pinwheeled it. Steve howled as if he had shot it himself. God that felt good! It wouldn't have meant near as much without Steve. It was simply the best moment archery gave me, Steve gave me. Thanks Steve, you are missed and you certainly gave,,,

I just learned of Steve's passing when I visited the Web Site to see his new bow site. I met him when I worked at Finleys GMC in South Beloit, and we enjoyed "numerous" discussions both about his truck and bowhunting. He is one of the reasons I picked up a bow again after 20 years. My deepest and most sincere condolences, for your loss - I will always remember his laugh and his deep dedication to the sport of archery. I have lost a friend - but I will always carry him in my memories.

I am extremely sorry for your loss. I lost my mom to cancer in June of this year and I took care of her from the time she was diagnosed to the night she passed. It's hard to lose someone you are so close to. I grew up as a single parent child and even though she did not know about the outdoors she got me magazines like Field and Stream and Outdoor life and that's where I learned alot. I now own two outdoor radio shows, Xplor the Outdoors and the Poacher Chronicles. Hold onto your faith and it will get you by the tough times. Trust me.

Dear Dianne our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, Steve will be dearly missed by so many people. We especially will miss his long phone calls trying to explain to us why the tolerances had to be so precise on his parts. Steve was so technical that many a time we needed an interpreter to explain what he was trying to say (usually I was more confused after talking to him then prior too). Steve was precise on his designs however very lenient when it came to relationships. Once you cracked that hard shell, a hand shake was all he needed to gain your trust and make you part of the Sure-loc family. He was a true friend and I regret never telling him that he was. God bless from his friends at Welch Allyn.

Dear Dianne, I'm so sorry for the loss of your wonderful husband, Steve! I only went on my computer today & found a message from Todd, informing me of Steve's untimely death. My heart is heavy for you & I send you loads of love & prayers. I know that my Mom's heart is still breaking for the loss of my Dad, so I can only imagine what you're going through right now. You've gone through a lot this year with Steve's illness, so I will continue to keep you & your extended family in my prayers. Del & I are doing fine since my Dad's passing, but as I said, I know my Mother still misses him greatly & after 61 years of marriage it's hard for her to wrap her brain around losing him. The death of a beloved husband & soul mate is never easy to bear, but please know that you are thought of often & we can only hope our prayers will bring some peace to you & yours. Take good care of yourself. We will be thinking of you during this sad time. All our love, Del & Cynthia

Dear Gibbs family, I am sorry to hear about Steve passing on. I did not know him very well but was one of the grateful athletes who Steve helped over the years with sight sponsorships. After reading many wonderful posts about him, it is obvious he put a lot of himself into the making of Sureloc sights and I am sure he'll be all around the world now looking through those sights as they win World Championships, Olympic Games, or are simply aiming at hay bails in the back yard. Diane; I sent you a message Sunday that must have gotten lost in the space of the internet. Marsha and I send our condolences for your loss. It is a great tribute to Steve to read the remembrance messages from his friends in archery. God be with him, may his arrows fly straight and be true to the mark. We will miss Steve everytime we look at one of the many great things he designed and built for Archery. I will not be able to shoot this coming year due to having both knees replaced and needing surgery for left shoulder. However, God willing, we will see you in Redding or Vegas in 2009 after I have recovered. As I mentioned in my lost prior message, one of my great regrets in life will be that Steve was not able to travel to Alaska to join me hunting the Kobuk due to his business commitments. Dianne and the entire Sure-Loc Family, may god bless you and your families. I remember not long ago while in Paris, Texas at the third ASA tournament of the year when we found out about Steve's diagnosis with cancer. It took us all by suprise, and I must say that it was just nine months ago. That goes to show our time here in this great place is numbered, and we should never take a single day for granted. Steve is such an inspirtaion to this entire archery family it is hardly comprehensible. He has touched so many in so little time. The Almighty God above must have needed one of the best finger shooters to ever walk this earth. Thanks for your straight-forwardness, your keen sense of humor, and your love of the sport. I met Steve almost 20 years ago at an I.B.O. shoot in Nelsonville, Ohio. While I was walking around the venue, I happened to come across Sure-Loc’s booth. I was looking for a target sight and was impressed with the quality of Steve’s work. After talking with him about his sights’ features--most of which I couldn’t appreciate because I was very new to the sport--I was all set to buy a Sure-Loc. But then I heard the price. The sight cost almost as much as the bow I had at the time! When I told Steve that I couldn’t ever imagine spending that much money on a sight, he turned deadly serious and said, “This is the best sight in the world.” He then politely left me and started talking with another customer. As I walked away from the booth the only thing that I could think was that Steve was one of the more intense people I’d ever met. A few years later my love affair with archery grew into an addiction and then into a semi-serious career. I was writing for several archery magazines and beginning to do PR and advertising work for several archery companies. Not surprisingly, as I learned more about archery I learned that Sure-Loc sights were worth what Steve was asking for them. They were the ‘best in the world.’ They were so good that I wanted to do some work for Sure-Loc, and to my good fortune I was able to convince Steve and Dianne to let me write a few press releases for them. I have to admit that I was quite intimidated by Steve at first. He’d get quite technical with me as he’d describe the products I was supposed to write about. I’d almost always have to talk with Dianne afterward to translate what Steve said into something the average person could easily understand. Additionally, I was still a little taken back by the way Steve would tell me—and tell me in his unique, absolutely, beyond a doubt, 100% certain way that he had—how his latest product was the best of its type ever made. Given the quality of all his previous work I knew he was probably right, but I still thought Steve was wound a little too tight. I ended up doing a number of PR and advertising jobs for Sure-Loc. Some of the jobs required me to spend two or three days with Steve and Dianne, even staying at their home on a few occasions. It was then that I saw a different side of Steve, something beyond what our business relationship had allowed. The intense, expert machinist/extraordinarily creative product designer was still there, but it was tempered by an emotional side that I had never suspected. He was a loving family man with a wife and daughter who meant everything to him. He was also a committed Christian and budding guitarist, among many other things. And he had a sense of humor too! That really took me by surprise. Additionally, I found Steve’s friends and employees—Lorie and Larry, in particular, who happen to be both—to be incredibly loyal. And I figured out why pretty quickly too. Once you got to know Steve, he treated you like ‘family.’ And with Dianne by his side, an incredibly giving and caring woman in her own right, I was welcomed into the Sure-Loc family with open arms. I learned that while Steve was intense, he wasn’t ‘full of himself.’ He just believed in his products, and he was right to do so. Sure-Loc does make some of the world’s best archery products, and that’s probably true, in large part, because of Steve’s intensity. I changed careers several years ago and dropped out of the archery world. Unfortunately for me, that also meant leaving the Sure-Loc family. I didn't even know he was ill until I received a call last night telling me that he was gone. I miss my Sure-Loc family, and I regret that I’ll never have a chance to spend time working with Steve again. My heart goes out to Dianne and the rest of Steve’s family. May we all find some comfort in remembering Steve for his kind self, brilliant engineering, and intensity, among his many other wonderful attributes. He was a good person…and I don’t say that about many people.

Diane and family, You are all in my thoughts during this period of mourning. A few sentences seems inadeguate to describe how highly I thought of Steve. Steve was a truly good man and someone who's tenacity and courage was an example to be followed, but what I admired the most was his kindness. Anyone lucky enough to get past Steve's bluntness, got to know a man who had all the qualities embodied in the two words "good man." I looked up to him and will always remember the advice and guidance he gave me when I got off course. He was my friend and I will miss him. Sincerely, Eric Springer

My deepest sympathies to the family and close friends of Steve. I was fortunate to have met Steve at the Blackhawk Archers of Rockton IL during "the original" 3D tourney in the late-70's. Steve, a co-worker of mine (close friend of Steve) and I shot the course and Steve soundly trounced us that day.
